Fish on the “Mauna Loa” with Captain Joe Thrasher
Starting out on the Half/Full day open party boats in So Cal in my early teens, it didn't take long to realize fishing was going to be a career choice! Working my way up to the long-range fleet fishing farther south of the border catching giant Yellowfin, Wahoo, and Marlin in the blue waters, the big game fishing addiction was set in stone.
Late in 1989, the decision was made to move to Kona Hawaii the Blue Marlin capital of the world where I've lived for 35 years; Commercial Fishing the offshore seamounts for many years before starting a family and wanting to spend time closer to home Charter Fishing.
The reward of Charter Fishing over the years has been great, seeing newcomers to the sport as well as seasoned anglers catch the fish of their dreams. But it’s the next generation of junior anglers catching their first gamefish that's most enjoyable!
I now operate a custom 42-ft Miller named the “Mauna Loa”. She is tournament-rigged with the best tackle and comes fully stocked with all the amenities.
Amenities
Amenities include a full-sized restroom, a large salon with two A/C units, two refrigerators, an ice maker, leather couches, and a flybridge with spacious guest seating. We have pastries and a light snack in the morning, a supply of bottled water, and Gatorade. We will also take special requests whether it be lunches or someone’s preferred beverage.
We prefer catch and release for all marlin, we are also one of the very few boats that don’t sell our fish, so any mahimahi, ono, and ahi are fileted, bagged, iced, and sent back with you if you would like to enjoy fresh fish during your stay on the island.
Family Friendly
Families with kids of all ages are welcome, we also offer Whale Watching and sunset Cruises, and of course, we accommodate the most diehard of fishermen with our top-of-the-line sportfishing gear.
Departure times are flexible as we understand, not everyone is an “early riser”.
